Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences

Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs. Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students. Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding. These strategies are shown below.

English Language Arts 

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Goal: By the end of the 2022-23 school year, 80% of K students will score at or above the grade level benchmark according to the PALS/iReady assessment.  By the end of the 2022-23 school year, 80% of 1st -6th grade students will score at or near grade level benchmark in Phonological Awareness and Phonics according to the iReady.  By the end of the 2022-23 school year, 80% of 3rd - 6th grade students will pass the Virginia Standards of Learning Assessment in Language Arts.  

Strategy 1: Intentionally develop oral language in the core language arts block (Tier 1) and throughout the day.

Strategy 2: Use evidence-based literacy practices to explicitly and systematically teach the skills necessarey for fluent word reading in the core language arts block. (Tier 1)

Strategy 3: Use evidence-based intervention resources aligned to the Science of Reading to provide literacy intervention. (HB 1865). (Tier 2/3)

 

Mathematics 

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Goal:  On the 2022-2023 Math SOL, 100% of students in grades 3-6 will pass or make growth as measured by the VGA/SOL.

80% of students in grades 1-2 will meet grade level benchmark as measured by the AVMR- Structuring Numbers Assessment. Grade 1 students are expected to be Level 2. Grade 2 students are expected to be Level 4.

80% of students in PK and K will meet the grade level benchmark as measured by the EMAS.

Strategy 1:  Teachers will design and implement Tier 1 instruction and assessments that provides students the opportunity to demonstrate strategies and thinking as mastery of understanding standards.

Strategy 2: We will utilize a math workshop model as a delivery of Tier 1 mathematics instruction.

Strategy 3 We will implement structures and practices to ensure all students receive differentiated Tier 2 and Tier 3 mathematics instruction.

 

Wellness 

Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Goal: By the end of the 2022-2023 school year students in grades K-6 will experience a foavorable response increase of 10% in the areas of social awareness and self-management as measured by the SEL Screener.

Strategy 1: Implement Responsive Classroom as a schoolwide Social Emotional learning support

Strategy 2: Implement Tier 1 wellness programs - Positivity Project and begin implementing Yoga 4 Classroom strategies throughout the school

Strategy 3: Engage students in activities building their sense of self, celebrate their skills and abilities and connections to the school


 

Portrait of a Graduate (POG)

Outcome: All students will complete a POG Presentation of Learning (POL) by 2025-26. 

Goal: By the end of SY 2022-2023: 100% of students will demonstrate increased understanding of POG and an increase in student engagement as reported on a student survey given at the beginning and end of the year.

Strategy 1: The school will build an understanding with students, staff and the community about why POG attributes and skills positively impact students at, outside of, and beyond school.

Strategy 2: Collaborative teams will align content knowledge and skills with POG attributes and skills.
